  • Katherine Irwin Thomas

    Taking Your Playing to the Next Level - Katherine Irwin Thomas

    Katherine is a school orchestra teacher with Fulton County Schools, holds her TTCT in Irish Fiddle from CCÉ, the Phoenix School Music Director, and has had a long and intimate relationship with her fiddle. In this workshop for All Instruments, we’ll discuss how to take your playing from where you are to where you want to be. Whether your goal is to play a local session, join a ceili band or compete in the All Ireland Fleadh; Katherine will take you through building repertoire, creating sets, goal-setting and practice journals to build your skills and performance confidence. We’ll discuss continuing education, home practice routines and how you should pick tunes as well as staying motivated.

  • Christina Dowling

    Learn the National Anthem of Ireland - Christina “Nina” Dowling

    Nina has been singing since she could walk! She has performed with Irish Bands in Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis over two decades while also performing the National Anthem during several sports events including the NCAA BIG 10 Women's Basketball games and the Frozen Final Four, NCAA Big 10 Women's Hockey. She joined the Phoenix School as Singing coach in 2023 and two of her students qualified for the 2024 World Competition in Wexford, Ireland. This class is open to all ages and for singers with a basic understanding of vocal technique. Nina will teach the Amhrán na bhFiann called "The Soldier's Song" in Irish.

  • Sarah Ling

    Beginner / Intermediate Concertina 2 - Sarah Ling

    Sarah Ling currently studies Music Education at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at UGA. Sarah has qualified for the All-Ireland in fiddle and duets for many years. She is currently certified in Suzuki training, and teaches elementary music, fiddle, concertina, and beginning whistle. Sarah’s workshops are taught by ear and at a comfortable pace for beginner to intermediate level. She will suggest ways on how to embellish the tune with ornamentation, rhythmic variations, and more so any player can discover how to make a tune “theirs”, regardless of their playing level. Both the Saturday and Sunday workshops will offer different tunes allowing students to participate in both! It is recommended that players already have a familiarity with the C/G concertina before taking this class.

  • John Maschinot:

    Intermediate Irish Tin Whistle and Flute - John Maschinot

    John Maschinot is a professional uilleann piper, flute and tin whistle player and teacher. During his forty year career he has taught countless private students, workshops and thousands of students in schools as a visiting teaching artist. He is on staff at The Phoenix School of Irish Arts. This class is for those who already have some facility with their instrument and can play some basic tunes. We’ll work on improving technique (breathing, phrasing, articulation), playing tunes by ear, and rudiments of ornamentation. Also suggestions for listening and other resources will be discussed.

Workshops with members of Cherish the Ladies

Irish supergroup Cherish the Ladies has been performing for and adored by audiences for nearly 40 years. Led by the gregarious and virtuosic Joanie Madden and joined by incredible multi-talented and multi-instrumentalist band members Mary Coogan, Mirella Murray, Kate Purcell, Nollaig Casey, and Kathleen Boyle. You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to learn about the music and the tradition during intimate workshops with these world-renowned performers and entertainers.

  • Joanie Madden

    The Flute and The Whistle - Joanie Madden

    Join Grammy Award winning and All-Ireland champion Joanie Madden, leader of Cherish The Ladies, for an engaging flute and whistle workshop. Joanie’s expertise as a master flutist and world-class performer make this a must attend session. Learn her approach to ornamentation and phrasing while learning new tunes and getting feedback from one of the best on taking your musicality to the next level. This workshop is suitable for advanced flute and whistle players, and intermediate level musicians who have at least some experience playing Irish music and who are comfortable learning at a faster pace. While this workshop is directed towards flute and whistle players, others who want to sit in and learn more about Joanie’s music are welcome to register and participate as observers.

    Irish Accordion - Mirella Murray

    Join All-Ireland champion and master musician Mirella Murray, accordion player from Cherish the Ladies, for this workshop on accordion techniques in Irish traditional music. Learn her approach to creating life in the music through ornamentation and phrasing, and how to play authentically and with rhythmic dynamism. As time allows Mirella will teach various tunes from the repertoire of Irish music. Mirella’s expertise and reputation as a master of the instrument make this a must-attend session for anyone interested in Irish traditional music.

    Advanced Irish Fiddle - Nollaig Casey

    Fiddle players are in for a treat in this workshop with Nollaig Casey of Cherish the Ladies. Renowned for her exceptional talent and unique style, you will learn her distinctive fiddling style that makes her playing so elegant and emotionally rich. As a multi-instrumentalist from a young age, Nollaig will also share her unique perspectives and insights into the richness of the Irish music tradition, and how to play authentically with your own style. This workshop is suitable for advanced fiddle players, and intermediate players comfortable learning at a faster pace.

    Accompanying Irish Music on Guitar - Mary Coogan

    Featured artist Mary Coogan of Cherish the Ladies brings her nimble fingered expertise to this workshop on accompanying Irish tunes and songs on guitar. This workshop will explore rhythmic and melodic approaches to accompanying Irish music. As time permits, the workshop will also explore the music of Cherish the Ladies, and how the rhythm section works together to create their unique and mesmerizing sound. This workshop is suitable for intermediate and advanced rhythm players with at least some experience playing Irish music. Don’t miss this chance to learn from on of the best.

    Songs of Cherish the Ladies - Kate Purcell

    Join County Clare songstress Kate Purcell, lead singer for Irish supergroup Cherish the Ladies. Kate will teach several songs for your repertoire while exploring the rich vocal techniques that create her beautiful and distinctive sound. Kate has wide-ranging musical interests and expertise drawing from Irish, folk, blues, country, and other styles, and will draw on her vast experience in sharing songs and tricks of the trade with workshop participants. This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in Irish songs. Non-vocalists are also welcome to sit in and observe.

    Keyboard accompaniment in Irish traditional music - Kathleen Boyle

    Kathleen Boyle from Glasgow, Scotland comes from a family steeped in the traditional music of Donegal. Her father Hughie is a talented musician and handed down his love of music to her. Kathleen is a talented pianist and accordion player and has won All-Scotland and All-Britain titles on both instruments. Participants will learn chord progressions and rhythmic approaches to accompanying traditional tunes on keyboard. The workshop will also explore how the piano, guitar, accordion, and other instruments work together to create the unique and much loved sounds of Cherish the Ladies. Participants are welcome to bring a portable keyboard if they wish, or just to sit and listen while learning about the approach to the keyboard in Irish music and songs. Non-musicians may also enjoy listening to this presentation and are welcome to register and sit in as observers.
